Installing Locks on Your Garage Door

Many garage doors are not sold with locks installed on them. If they do have a lock, they aren’t usually great at securing the door. So, it is up to you to install the locks you prefer. When it comes to garage doors, there are quite a few types of locks to choose from.

There are:
  • Deadbolts

These locks come in several variations. There are some that requires a key for it to be opened and the key also has to be used when locking it. Some types have locks on only one side of the garage door too. So, you can place it on the inner side and keep it inconspicuous.

Despite the type of deadbolt that you choose, it is important to know that deadbolts are one of the most economical locks for homeowners. And, they are very good security devices. So, if you’d rather not spend a fortune on your garage door lock, but you’d like to rest assured that it will provide a high level of protection, a deadbolt is a great option for you.

  • T-handle locks

Many homeowners use these locks on their garage door. The keys are not very easy to make or copy and they are pretty secure locks. Similar to deadbolts, there are a few variations to these locks. However, they remain pretty similar in how they function.

Perhaps, the most confusing thing about these locks when trying to figure out which one to purchase is the brand. They’re available in several brands, but they remain quite effective regardless of the brand you choose. Of course, there are premium brands that may outlast and outperform others. So, you may want to look out for those.

  • Keyless locks

These locks have been gaining a lot of popularity nowadays. That’s because they have been shown to be one of the most secure types of locks. Instead of using keys that are easily copied or can get lost/stolen, these locks use various other methods of entry. Some ways that you can access these locks are by using your fingerprint, special cards, pass codes and much more.

Although keyless locks have a lot of advantage to them, there are also some drawbacks that you should note. Apart from their typically high price, these locks tend to require some expertise in technology. So, if you’ve always tried to avoid ‘techy stuff’, this may not be the best solution to your security concerns.

  • Other types of locks

There are several other types of locks that can be used on your garage door. One of the best ways to determine which one will work best for you is by speaking with a professional. This way, you’ll be able to get personalized advice based on the type of door you have installed and the amount of protection you need for the area you live in.

Some other types of locks that are suitable for using on your garage door are padlocks, side door bolts and even alarm systems.

Although it may seem very heavy and difficult to move, don’t forget that there are some very determined burglars out there. They’ll find a way to get around it if you don’t secure it well enough. Don’t be fooled into thinking that your garage door opener is the only security needed. It isn’t!
